One Junky Travel Trailer - The Whole Story!

1998 Northwood Nash

March 2017 my husband, Jeremy, and I purchased this 28ft 1996 travel trailer.

We bought this "vintage" RV with the hope of just painting and it'd be a quick flip, but as you'll see one thing led to another, 8 months later (and roughly $3,300) I couldn't be more pleased!

We began by removing the out-dated dinette and that started it all. Behind the bench backing grew an ominous black growth. When we removed the panel it was a domino effect to follow. By the time we were finished the RV was bare.

Turning lemons into lemonade...

After tearing everything out, and I do mean everything, it felt and smelt better leaving us excited to transform this beast into the beauty it was capable of.

Walls

Before replacing molded insulation, which was most of it, we added some 2x2's where it lacked support and nailed up thin underlayment for walls. I purposely chose panels that would make great candidates for the gray/lime wash I would apply later.

Fine Dining

Simple and clean.

Wanting a two toned look I chose Benjamin Moore Chelsea Gray for the base cabinets and paired with Benjamin Moore Dove Wing for the uppers and trim.

Then lots and lots of painting. 52 hours to be exact. The old oak had to be cleaned, sanded, cleaned again, then primed (Zinsser) several times and tediously painted after the primer cured for a couple days. Spraying would have come in handy here, but I'm cheap.

The old counter top was removed and replaced with a 3/4" sheet of plywood. I lightly sanded it, and finished with Watco Danish Oil. Jeremy cut a hole for the sink and faucet and viola - new eat in bar.

Hardware:

Stools from Walmart

Living Spaces

I'm better with visuals..

Before - Living Room

Okay, so obviously the couch had to go, we tore it down bit-by-bit with plans of reupholstering it but after the sticker shock from our local seamstress we decided it was easier (K, cheaper) to replace it with a futon which would also fold down and serve as guest quarters. Wanted and purchased a futon initially but was too thick to fold and wouldn't stay in place so we went with a cheaper looking futon. It's my least favorite part.

I also detested the mirror cabinets so after removing the fronts I smashed out the mirrors and replaced them with the same 5mm underlayment to make a visual match with the other kitchen uppers being solid faces. I tacked and caulked around the gaps. Then primed, and painted with Benjamin Moore Dove Wing, hardware from Amazon.

Wall decor by Hobby Lobby, wall sconces from Home Depot, and the floor...have I mentioned that gorgeous Pergo Flooring?

Flooring

One of our final projects but also my favorite was installing the flooring.

Pergo MAX flooring

We decided to go with a floating laminate floor by Pergo Max from Lowes in River Road Oak.

Jeremy and I took a weekend to complete it and only a handful of arguments on how were going to do it. But it was worth every penny! I cannot say enough about the ROI on a good flooring choice.

It is and should be the star of the show.

Front Door

Greetings & Good-bye's

Even the front door got special treatment with stained tongue and groove boards that were ripped on a table saw and nailed in place.

Kinda like curb appeal except for the entryway..

This is a fine time to mention the bench seat we built with storage underneath. Also, notice the framed windows?

Lattice framed windows

Super easy painting and nailing lattice in a way that conforms the curvy RV typical window into one more home like. This will also make it easier to install window coverings should the homeowner choose.

Shower ready for facelift

After a thorough bleaching I prepped the shower (shown left) and sprayed Fusion Krylon in Satin White (shown right) creating a much cleaner welcoming vibe.

Hardware Accents:

Finished Updated RV Bathroom

For the final touch we attached (painted in Chelsea Grey) beadbord and molding for the wainscot look:

Details were not overlooked in this tiny space. The bathroom was given a better residential shower curtain (from Amazon) with birds accenting the bedroom lamp and a killer craigslist deal on an oval mirror opening up and resounding more light.

Bathroom door before and after

Even as far as updating the bathroom door. We ripped plywood and nailed it to frame the existing door. After I puttied/spackled the nail holes and caulked around the new addition and gaps to create one piece. Then it was primed and painted just like the cabinets.

Vanity before and after

The hallway vanity also received a face lift.

The cabinets painted in the

continued Benjamin Moore Dove Wing theme and the sink got an overhaul with a new glass vessel and faucet from eBay.

This baby feels like a million bucks!

The Master

Last but certainly not least...

Before we got our hands on it the bedroom was designed with a twin built-in-bed located on each side of the room. Seen in picture below:

Before Bedroom

We wanted to make it an oasis, a rustic oasis if you will. So we got to work:

Ta-Dah!

In Closing

Nothing pays off like hard work.

Let me finish this blog with thanking my husband, Jeremy. He is a trooper and puts up with my crazy so I have to give him mad props lol. He has a full time IT career and put his nights and weekends into supporting my passion. What a guy!

This trailer was posted on Craigslist and we were bombarded with calls and emails. Lots of folks just wanted to come and admire it or praise us. Not a bad pat on the back! When the trailer sold we made a couple very happy and put an extra $9,000 into our pockets. What a win-win!!

Now thats done let do another, follow me, and stay tuned!

Next we take on a 98' Fifth Wheel remodel!
